How SMs Support without Undermining Self-Management (video)

In this 18-minute video, I chat with colleague Ryan Ripley to answer a common question I get about Scrum:

How do I support and challenge my Scrum Team to grow and improve without undermining self-managing teams, autonomy, and ownership?

Ryan and I discuss:

  1. We have to start with ourselves. What’s going on inside us, and how are we showing up?
  2. After that check-in with ourselves, we can see more clearly and ask ourselves what our team needs from us.
  3. The importance of balancing what’s needed now (the short game) with what’s the bigger thing wanting to emerge (the long game).
  4. Being able to sit in discomfort of not knowing and possibly failing or messing up.
  5. How openness means we have to be open to being wrong, so we can approach with humility and curiosity.
  6. Owning our impact and applying empiricism to ourselves as Scrum Masters.
